JURE KASTELIC: MUSICAL CHAIRS
Carl Kostyál is delighted to present Slovenian-born, Venice-based artist Jure Kastelic’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery, ‘Musical Chairs’.
October 30 – November 21, 2024
The synergy between past and present is woven throughout ‘Musical Chairs.’ In ‘Arianna,’ Kastelic portrays the Cretan princess (known as Ariadne in Greek mythology) to comment on the power of cryptocurrency. Drawing on Turchin’s writings in ‘End Times,’ he likens Arianna’s thread, which helped Teseo (Theseus) escape the Minotaur, to bitcoin, which guides individuals through the complexities of today’s financial landscape.
Kastelic’s depiction of Arianna emphasises that, like her thread, cryptocurrency empowers people to break free from traditional financial systems and pursue new paths in a world marked by economic disparities.
In Kastelic’s practice, the artist examines the interplay of opposing forces and ideas that shape our existence, desires, and material manifestations of value. His work is an exploration of what defines and retains value in time of dilution underpinning the social and political struggle of late capitalist societies.
Kastelic takes inspiration from analog and digital resources such as online communities, classical painters, and essays on the history of economy to create surreal and dreamlike scenarios.
