SIDEWAYS

Ross + Kramer is pleased to announce “Sideways”, a group exhibition of works by Chloe Chiasson, NH DePass, Gustav Hamilton, and Joyce Pensato.

September 5 – October 6, 2024

The exhibition includes exclusively horizontal paintings, examining how these four artists engage with the orientation not merely as a format, but as a critical conceptual framework. Each artist utilizes distinct techniques experimenting with scale, depth, perspective, and dimensionality to create highly impactful, emotive pieces.

Chloe Chiasson is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY, who explores the construction of social normalities within self expression and sexual identity through her sculptural mixed media works. NH DePass is an artist whose work explores a tension between craft and digital innovation. DePass uses classical techniques like hand sewing and carpentry while incorporating digitally rendered reference materials to create works that disturb historical and cultural timelines.

In his work, Hamilton explores the importance of objects in relation to the stories we tell about who we are and what we have experienced and accomplished. Pensato is known for her large-scale lively cartoon characters that marry abstract expressionism and pop culture through a frenzied technique—involving quickly layered gestures and a sharp black and white palette.

When brought into conversation with one another, these works are united by their shared familiar perspective and invite the audience to contemplate how horizontal orientation parallels our quotidian visual experiences.
